Using Prompt Input variables in your Archie prompt

Prompt Inputs let you (or anyone in your firm running the template) provide information that Archie cannot automatically pull from the Matter or uploaded documents.

Prompt Inputs appear at the top of the template and can be:

  • Short text
  • Long text
  • Dates
  • Multiple choice
  • Document uploads
  • Yes/No selections

Prompt Inputs can be used in two ways - as context or a variable.

Using Prompt Inputs as context

By default, Archie treats Prompt Inputs as context. They influence Archie’s reasoning, tone, factual interpretation, urgency and recommendations. They also do not appear verbatim in the draft unless you insert it as a variable.

Prompt Inputs act as a "read this and keep it in mind" instruction for Archie.

Using Prompt Inputs as a variable

When a Prompt Input is inserted into the prompt using placeholders (e.g. [CONTRACT SUMMARY]), it becomes a structured variable, i.e.:

  • The content is explicitly injected into the prompt
  • You control where and how it appears
  • It’s deterministic and visible in the prompt logic

For example, in the Buyer’s Due Diligence step, [CONTRACT SUMMARY], [TITLE SUMMARY], and [STRATA SUMMARY] are explicitly combined into a single report.

Think of using Prompt Input variables as “put this exact content here.”

Examples of Prompt Input fields

Common details the person running the template might need to provide include:

  • Deadline, as this would vary each time
  • Tone e.g., formal, neutral, simple language
  • Issue description, such as the client’s version of events or facts not in Smokeball
  • Special instructions e.g., “keep this brief”
  • Desired outcome and what the client hopes to achieve

Archie will:

  • insert the value if you insert it as a variable, or
  • use the value as context if no variable exists.
