Learn how to use the Knowledge Sources section in Archie to store resources that provide extra context for answering prompts.

What are knowledge sources?

Knowledge sources are documents that contain information which might be relevant to your Archie prompts, but can be applied across most matters.

Some examples of knowledge sources include the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act or a document containing examples of the tone to use when drafting correspondence with clients and other lawyers.

Adding knowledge sources to Archie allows it to have full context for your matter and gives you control over specialized information that Archie can provide in response to a prompt.

Adding a Knowledge Source

Knowledge sources are available across all matters and can be added from an individual matter.

  1. Open a matter in the Smokeball Desktop App or Web App.
  2. Select the Archie tab and navigate to the Knowledge Sources tab on the left panel.

  3. Select Add Knowledge Source. Enter a name and brief description of the knowledge source, then select relevant Matter Types. Removing all Matter Types from the box means that the knowledge source will be available for all Matter Types.

  4. Select Create Knowledge Source.
  5. A new window will open for you to configure the knowledge source. Select Browse to upload one or more documents (PDF, DOCX, TXT or MD) from your PC.

  6. Once you upload documents, text will be extracted from them. This may take a few minutes and the Status column will indicate progress. You can leave this screen at any time as the process runs in the background.

  7. Once it has finished processing, the toggle on the top-right side of the screen will become available. Select whether to activate the knowledge source for yourself or all staff members using the drop-down menu, then click on the toggle to make it Active.

Once a knowledge source has been toggled to Active, Archie will take it into account when generating a response to a prompt.

Using Knowledge Sources in an Archie conversation

By default, Archie selects relevant knowledge sources when you ask a question. You can change this by clicking the Knowledge Sources icon in the chat box to choose specific sources or disable them entirely.

When Archie is thinking of a response, the knowledge sources are listed to show you that they are being utilized.

Knowledge Sources for Research

Links to knowledge sources are cited in Archie responses. Click on the reference to open a preview of the knowledge source on the right-hand side of the screen.

Knowledge Sources for Correspondence

Uploading examples of correspondence as a knowledge source will allow Archie to draft correspondence in your voice and tone. Below is an example of how this can be used to draft a letter to your client.
