Setting up Westlaw Deep Research
Learn what your firm needs, how the firm owner activates Westlaw Deep Research, and how each user signs in with their Thomson Reuters account.

An active Westlaw Advantage or CoCounsel Legal subscription. CoCounsel Legal is the larger Thomson Reuters subscription and includes Westlaw Advantage access. Either qualifies. Please note: Westlaw Edge or Precision do not qualify. |

There is no additional cost for Smokeball users with the Archie add-on who also have a CoCounsel Legal or Westlaw Advantage subscription. For questions about CoCounsel Legal or Westlaw Advantage, including pricing, contact your Smokeball representative.
Part 1: Firm owner activates Westlaw Deep Research
A designated firm owner must activate Westlaw Deep Research before other staff can use the integration within Archie. This includes accepting the Thomson Reuters terms.
- Sign in to Smokeball as the firm owner. Open a matter and select the Archie tab.

Select Legal Research in the left rail.
- Activate Westlaw Deep Research for the firm.
Once it is activated, all licensed staff can use it.
Part 2: Each user signs in
- On the Legal Research page, find Westlaw AI Deep Research and select the option to sign in. [CONFIRM button label]

Sign in with your Thomson Reuters account.

On the Authorize access screen, select Accept. This lets Smokeball WL Deep Research access your Thomson Reuters profile and email.

You are returned to Smokeball. Westlaw AI Deep Research shows Active, with Signed in as and your email. Make sure the box on the right is ticked so Archie includes Westlaw as a research source.

Staying signed in
Westlaw signs you out every 24 hours. When that happens, sign in again from Legal Research. To disconnect, select Sign out on the Westlaw AI Deep Research card.
