Learn how to create a blank letter complete with automated fields from a matter in Smokeball Boost.Â
Before you begin
You must connect Microsoft Word Online to Smokeball Boost in order for this feature to function properly.Â
- Open a matter in Smokeball Boost.

Select the Documents tab, then select Create Letter located above the document browser.

Select the addressee, then select Create In Word Web.

Select Open letter to <Addressee>.
- The letter will open in Word Online, with the Logo, Firm Details, Date, Matter Number, Addressee and Sign-off displayed in the grey automated fields.
- This letter template is a standard version created by the Smokeball Team. You can edit or remove any of the automated fields within the letter, but uploading your own template is not supported.
- Compose your letter.Â

To view matter details, select the Smokeball tab and click on Show Details. The right-hand panel will display matter details. Select View if you wish to open the matter in a new browser tab.

Once you are done, select Save to Matter from the Smokeball tab.

A message will appear in Word Online notifying you that the document was successfully saved to the matter.

Navigate back to the Documents tab of the matter in Smokeball Boost. The letter will appear in the list of documents.
View all changes made to your letter
Every time you Save to Matter in Word Online, a new version will appear when you click on the document from the matter.
Edit your letterhead template
To edit your firm's default letterhead template:

Select the Settings (gear) icon on the bottom-left corner of the Smokeball Web App, then select Firm Settings.

Select Documents from the left menu, then select Edit Letterhead. A new window will open in Word Online.

Select the Smokeball tab at the top of the screen in Word Online, then select Show Details.
The Smokeball Toolbar will open from the right-hand side of the screen.
To add fields to the letterhead:
- Open the Smokeball Toolbar and expand one of the field options.
- Place your cursor where you want the field to appear in the document.

Double-click the field name to insert it. You can also select Insert.
You can change the format of a field by:

Clicking on or into an inserted field and choosing the format from the right-hand panel.

Clicking the Format button and selecting the applicable formatting from the drop-down menu, before Inserting it.
Select Save Letterhead to save your changes.
