Your End of Month (EOM) report suite is what you need to provide to your trust auditor. It brings together the reports you need at audit time, and you can view or print it whenever you like.
The reports are the same across Australia. What your auditor or external examiner asks you to provide can differ by state or territory, so if you’re not sure which ones to hand over, check your Law Society or examiner requirements or contact our team.
What reports are included in the End of Month report suite?
The suite includes the following reports:Â
- Trust Account Receipts Cash Book
- Trust Account Payments Cash Book
- Trust Journal Transfers
- Trial Balance Report
- Audit Logs
- Trust Ledger Overdrawn Report
- Controlled Money Listing
- Bank Reconciliation Report
How to download your End of Month reports
- From the Accounts section, select the End of Month tab.
- Select the trust account if you have more than one.
-
Click the End of Month report you want to open.
- Download or print as required.
Always run these from the End of Month tabÂ
Please ensure you run your audit reports from the End of Month tab – not the Reports tab. The same reports when run from the Reports tab can show different figures and won’t tie back to your trial balance.
Reconcile once at the end of the month
Since March 2026, your Cash Book Payments and Cash Book Receipts reports reflect the period of your final reconciliation for the month. If you reconcile several times in one month, these reports show only that final period – not the whole month – and your page numbering can be affected.
To keep your EOM reports covering the full month:
- Reconcile once, at the end of the month, with the date range set to the full month.
- If you want to check your figures partway through the month, you can begin the bank reconciliation and select Save Draft. You should only select Reconcile once the entire month has been reconciled.Â
Which reports does my auditor need?
In most cases, sending your auditor the complete set of monthly EOM reports is enough – the suite is built to cover trust audit requirements across Australia.
A few things worth knowing:
- Audit and external examiner requirements are set by your state’s law society or regulator, not by Smokeball.
- If an auditor asks for something that doesn’t seem to be in the suite – for example, a single combined ledger – it’s worth checking their examiner checklist, as the standard EOM reports usually satisfy it.
- A blank section (for example, a journal transfers report with no entries) simply means there was no activity of that type that month. It isn’t an error.
Why do my report page numbers carry over?
Page numbering continues from one month to the next by design. For example, if a report ended on page 4 last month, this month’s starts at page 5. This is a trust accounting compliance requirement in Australia, not an error.
Accessing reports for a closed trust account
If a trust account has been closed and you need the EOM reports for that account:Â
- Reopen the account in the Firm Settings.
- Access and download the End of Month Reports.
- On the first day of the following month, close the trust account from the Firm Settings.Â
While the trust account is open, you can change the display name in the settings to include "DO NOT USE" to flag that additional transactions should not be added to the trust account. Â
Compliance and certification
(NSW) Smokeball is listed under Certificate Number 16 as a certified trust accounting software package by the NSW Law Society. View the NSW Law Society website for more details.
