Send an SMS text message via the Client Portal

Learn how to send an SMS directly from Smokeball to your client’s mobile.

Effective communication with clients is important, particularly when it comes to legal matters. Timely and accurate communication can make all the difference in the outcome of a matter.

If you are unsure whether your client downloaded the Communicate mobile app, sending an SMS message is a secure and reliable alternative to ensure that your message reaches your client directly.

Start a conversation with an SMS text message

  1. Ensure the intended recipient’s contact card has the correct mobile number and email address.
  2. Open the matter file and select the Messages tab.

  3. From the left panel, select the plus icon in the External Matter Conversations section.
  4. Choose the party or parties to send an SMS to, then select Create from the bottom of the screen.
  5. Type your message, then select Send as SMS.
    • Files cannot be attached to SMS messages. 
    • Messages are limited to 238 characters.  
    • On the To field, recipients of the SMS are highlighted in blue. Click on a recipient's name to exclude them from the SMS.

  6. Click Send to send the message as an SMS.

Once the SMS is sent, the recipient can respond via SMS or Client Portal. 

Send an SMS in an existing Client Portal conversation

If you want to send an SMS from an existing conversation with a client:

  1. Open the matter file and select the Messages tab.

  2. Click on the conversation from the left panel. Conversations with clients are listed under the External Matter Conversations section.

  3. Type your message, then select Send as SMS.
    • Files cannot be attached to SMS messages. 
    • Messages are limited to 238 characters.  
    • On the To field, recipients of the SMS are highlighted in blue. Click on a recipient's name to exclude them from the SMS.

  4. Click Send to send the message as an SMS.

Once the SMS is sent, the recipient can respond via SMS or Client Portal.
