Learn how to allocate originating credits between originating attorneys for a matter in Smokeball.

Adding multiple Originating Attorneys to a matter

The matter must have more than one Originating Attorney listed before you can enable split Originating Attorney Credits for it.

To add other Originating Attorneys to a matter:

  1. Open the matter in the Smokeball Web App.
  2. Select Edit Matter on the top-right-hand corner of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to the Staff section and enter the Primary Originating Attorney (if you haven't already).
  4. Enter the Other Originating Attorney(s) one-by-one.

You can also add multiple Originating Attorneys from the Smokeball Desktop App, but we recommend doing so on the Web App so you can seamlessly follow the instructions below to enable Split Originating Attorney Credits.

Enabling Split Originating Attorney Credits

Once you have added all Originating Attorney(s) to the matter:

  1. Tick Split Originating Attorney Credits, located under the Other Originating Attorney(s) list in the Edit Matter screen of the Smokeball Web App.

Note: The list of Originating Attorneys cannot be edited while this setting is ticked.

  2. Choose whether credits should be Split Evenly or By Percentage. If you select By Percentage, enter the percentage amounts next to each listed Originating Attorney. The total amounts must equal 100%.

  3. Under the Assign Remainder To field, choose the Originating Attorney who should receive the remainder if there's an uneven split.
    • For example, if a payment is split evenly between two attorneys and the payment is $50.01, then the attorney that had the remainder assigned to them would receive $25.01 and the other attorney would receive $25.00.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the screen to Save Matter.

Reporting on Split Origination Credits

When Split Origination Credits are enabled on a matter, payments that are applied to invoices on that matter will show the split on the Income Allocation - Summary and Income Allocation - Details report when Originating Attorney is selected in the Run By or Subtotal By filters.
