Overview

CiteLaw is an AI-powered legal research platform built on a simple guarantee: its AI only answers from a real legal database that it actually queries, so it can't make up cases.

With the Smokeball integration, CiteLaw becomes the research layer on top of your practice. Conduct and organize verified legal research in CiteLaw — or inside Claude and ChatGPT through CiteLaw's connectors — and everything you produce, from research memos and verified drafts to contacts and research time, links back to the matters your firm manages in Smokeball.

What CiteLaw Offers

CiteLaw's research assistant works from a primary-law corpus of roughly 9.5 million cases, 2 million statute sections, and 1 million regulations across all 50 states, DC, and the federal system, along with court rules, agency and tax court decisions, and judges' standing orders. Every answer comes from a live query into that database, and every authority cited comes back as a clickable link to the actual record.

With CiteLaw, you can:

• Research case law, statutes, regulations, and court rules in plain language, with results linked to the full text of each authority
• Verify the citations in any document. Paste in a brief and CiteLaw checks every citation, telling you which are confirmed, which look like typos, and which don't exist
• Check whether a case is still good law before you rely on it, with the citing passages shown so you can read the treatment yourself
• Draft memos, letters, and motions grounded in verified authority, exported as Word documents
• Run your firm's standard documents as reusable AI workflows. Client letters, memo formats, and review checklists become repeatable processes that draft from a matter's real party details
• Research inside Claude and ChatGPT. CiteLaw's connectors put the same verified corpus and the same matters into the AI assistants your team already uses, so research done anywhere stays organized in one place

What the Integration Does

Connecting CiteLaw to Smokeball keeps your research and your matter data in sync in both directions:

• Links a CiteLaw research matter to its corresponding Smokeball matter, so research always happens in the context of the right case
• Brings documents from your Smokeball matter into CiteLaw, so research and drafting are grounded in the actual case file, not retyped facts
• Imports the parties on your Smokeball matter as contacts with their roles, so drafting workflows use the correct client and opposing party details automatically
• Sends contacts created in CiteLaw back to your Smokeball address book, attached to the right matter, so your firm's contact records stay complete
• Saves finished research memos and drafts back into the Smokeball matter as Word documents, ready to file where your firm already works
• Pushes research time entries directly into Smokeball billing, so time spent on research is captured and billable with no manual re-entry

Throughout all of this, Smokeball remains your firm's system of record — matters, documents, contacts, and billing stay in Smokeball.

How to Link Your Smokeball and CiteLaw Accounts

1. Log in to CiteLaw at citelaw.org
2. Open Settings, then select Integrations
3. Find Smokeball and click Connect
4. Sign in with your Smokeball credentials and approve the connection
5. Open a matter in CiteLaw and select Link to Smokeball matter, then choose the matching matter from your Smokeball list

Once connected, that matter's Smokeball files and parties are available inside CiteLaw, and any documents, contacts, and time entries you create in CiteLaw can be sent back to Smokeball with one click.

How the Integration Works

Matters Each CiteLaw matter can be linked to one Smokeball matter. Linking is nondestructive — nothing in Smokeball is changed, and the link can be removed at any time.

Documents Browse and import files from the linked Smokeball matter into CiteLaw, where they become searchable context for research and drafting. When a memo or draft is finished, export it to the Smokeball matter as a .docx so the case file in Smokeball stays complete.

Contacts Import the parties from a linked Smokeball matter into CiteLaw with one click, with client and opposing party roles carried over, so automated drafting workflows always use accurate party details. Contacts created in CiteLaw can be pushed back to Smokeball and attached to the matter, with duplicate protection so your address book stays clean.

Time Research time tracked in CiteLaw — whether with a live timer or manual entries — can be pushed to Smokeball billing on the linked matter, so research hours flow into your existing invoicing without double entry.
